PS3 failed in 2007: A look of what went wrong with Sony.

Let’s face the reality. Even if a lot of people doesn’t want to admit it. they have been disappointed more than once by the poor performance of the latest Sony console. 2007 can be easily considered as the worst year for the PlayStation brand. The sales are depressing, Sony “Father” Ken Kutaragi got kicked out from the company, all the “hits” have been smashed by the critics and media, let’s take a look of why the 2007 is something that no PS fan would like to remember.

 Lair:

Average ratio: 54/100

# copies sold: 163k in 13 weeks.

Heavenly Sword:

Average ratio: 79/100

# copies sold: 212k in 11 weeks.

Loco Roco Cocoreccho:

Average ratio: 71/100

# copies sold: N/A

Folklore:

Average ratio: 74/100

# copies sold: 66k in 7 weeks.

Ratchet & Clank Future:

Average ratio: 89/100

# copies sold: 180k in 5 weeks.

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune:

Average ratio: 89/100

# copies sold: 75k in debut week.

The Eye of Judgment:

Average ratio: 74/100

# copies sold: 72k in 5 weeks.

Warhawk:

Average ratio: 84/100

# copies sold: 166k in 13 weeks (bundle version).

As everybody can see, most, if not all of the PS3 first-party games have failed in some way. Let’s take for example Lair, arguably the biggest disappointmend of the year, which got a mediocre average ratio of 54/100 and basically bombed in retailers selling only 163k in 13 weeks. Heavenly Sword, portrayed numerous times by Sony like one of the first “next-gen” experiences, and an AAA game. What was the result? a game with a decent average of 79/100 wich also bombed in retailers selling barely 210k. Folklore, probably nobody was expecting something really big from this game, and that’s reflected in the sales; 66k in more than one month.

Ok, probably the reason of why those games are selling so poor it’s because people consider them mediocre. But, what’s wrong with the Sony consumer? Even the highest rated games of the console have sold really low numbers, take for example the Imsomniac game; Ratchet & Clank future. This one, being the highest rated game of the PS3 only sold around 200k in more than 4 weeks. Also, Uncharted Drake’s Fortune debuted with an inexcusable 75k.

Those 2 games are below the average of what Metacritic considers an AAA title, but, even if they don’t are high-quality software, they are by no means bad games. So what’s wrong with the sales? Publicity? No. Every month you see gigantic advertisments for PS3 games in popular American magazines such as MAD, Electronic Gaming Monthly, Playboy, Game Informer, etc. and the sales are still disappointing.

The same happens with the hardware sales. Honestly, I don’t believe that 5.000.000 around the world in 1 year is something to be proud of. Not even the reduced prices are working well for the PS3 in America, where the Microsoft console it’s outselling the PS3 by a considerable margin. Nintendo Wii, a console that’s being sold only in bundles that cost more than the PS3 is selling incredible well too. (Wal-Mart). So there’s no excuse for Sony.

Sony, you have 2 rivals that get exclusive triple A games frequently, and are selling software in amazing rates. What’s wrong with you? Do you wanna be considered a failure such as the Sega Dreamcast? or the Atari Jaguar? If you don’t wanna end like one of those consoles, you better have to start making some quality software and get back your audience that probably is getting more fun with the competition.

  5. I just read a Sony financial report released in October which states that Sony’s Games Division increased sales by almost 43%, due mostly to the PS3.

    I think you need to go back to class, kid.

  6. I’ve gt both a 360 and a Ps3, and honestly, when compared to the 360, the ps3 sucks. If it wasn’t for the HD movie playback, I would have already sold my ps3.

    I own both too, and everything in my $800+ 360 Elite arsenal broke after two months but my Forza 2 disc, the power supply and the headset. And this was just to play Forza 2. I’ve had nothing but good times with my PS3. If Forza wasn’t so good, I’d sell that M$ piece of poop ASAP. Needless to say, I’m not buying many 360 games.

  11. If you actually go through all your sources and analyze all the data you would see that the first year hardware sales for the PS3 is on par with the xbox360’s first year sales. So either consider both systems a failure or just wait and just enjoy the games that come out on all systems.

  12. I personally think that the games aren’t selling extremely well due to the fact that everything has gone up in price and it is only the PS3’s 1st year. I mean I would get Everyone of those games exceept for maybe Loco Roco & The Eye Judgement just because Ithose aren’t my type of games I like to play. If I had the money though I would have gotten all those games and more but currently can’t afford to buy them so I am waiting for them to go down in price. Will see how they sell in there lifetime sales I am sure they will all do well.

  13. How many 360 consoles did M$ sell it’s first year? And why are you so concerned about the sales? Do you own a huge chunk of Sony stock?

    I have all three consoles, and Uncharted and Ratchet were among the best games I’ve played this year. I’m very happy with all my consoles, including my PS3.

    Comaring 1st year of ps3 sales and 360 which has been around for a while aready 2 years if Iam not mistaken. I bet u dont have any of thouse games or any of thouse consoles. If u cant afford to buy a PS3 apply for a SOny CC u will get 100$ off from PS3 then u can try and tell ur view. JUst wait until 2008 u will see when MGS, GT5, FF and all killer titels come out:) it will be a force to be reckon with.
    Bout ur review u can stick it up ur arse, c”unt s like u keep mixing sony with shit, but in the end u will end up on their place mate. The have done it twice they will do it AGAIN. AND FOR A PROOF TELL ME WHERE IS XBOX 1? IS ANY GAMES COMING OUT FOR IT?

  16. Hes got a point.. Sony is sucking this gen.. compared to there reputation! 100 mil ps2’s… well you know about 30-40 mil were replacements.. all my freinds had to get at least 2-3 ps2’s cuz they kept breaking lol!

    ps3 isnt selling games atm cuz only 12 year olds own the console.. and well we know they haven’t got jobs so they cant buy games.. lol!!

  17. Sigh… alas, insted of this going to any kind of point, it’s turned into the ever-retarded ‘fanboy wars’… it’s like what they say about arguing on the internet…

    I wouldn’t personally trust Sony for anything, which includes what they say their sales are. I’m guessing this specific entry had information which was NOT from Sony, you can dig up whatever bullshit they say, but I personally won’t trust it, nor will a number of other people.

    And yes, I’ve played both the PS3 and the Xbox 360, so already I’ve surpassed what most of these fanboys. The Xbox 360 is my current favourite, as it doesn’t have a gimmick (like the Wii, which I’m beginning to think of it more as a joke), and it doesn’t have new, cheaper vesions of it which comepletly replace the older, but better versons of it (the PS3, with their non-back playable version).

    And yes, I do know that the PS3 is outselling the Xbox 360 – so what? The Xbox 360 is a year older, so most of the people who would get one in the first place already have one. And for those who still continue to bring it up, then there is one thing to say to them: What console released around the same time as the PS3 is dominating it in sales?

    And regardless, it’s already been a year with no everly-excitable games. And, it can probably be seen because the people I know with PS3s, they mainly spend their time with them doing Folding@Home with them… just shows how great these PS3 games are…

    I don’t know where this claim came from, but it’s very wrong. The Wii, even with a game bundled, is often sold for less than the PS3. Wal-mart’s Wii bundle is a limited thing and relatively recent at that.

    PS3 could have made a stronger showing this year with a better game line up, but this article really didn’t do a great job of backing that up.

    I think you just proved the ps3 is not a failure at all. Those really aren’t bad sales figures buddy- just because they don’t sell as well as halo 3 doesn’t make them commercial flops.

    im going to say something without having anything to back it up but if you did 3 days of research to find something short to say on a message board thingamajig like this you would come up with this …
    the ps3 is a good cinsole just compared to todays better consoles such as the 360 the wii and the gameboy (original)witch are so much better.
    the wii is fun but gets boring very quickly and all the moving around makes you feel asif you have had a good gaming session, while comparin two players one sitting down with the proper controller and one standing upwith the wii traditional controller. While both playing the same game and both at the same time the player sitting down got further, quicker and got bored easily while the player standing up thought she got a good gaming session when she got close to where the other player got though very slowley

    however the 360 is brilliant despite its hardware failure cos of the amazing single player games (mostley shoot em ups) and incomparable xboxlive that enables players to play online with thw world whether your playing halo3 or COD:4 which are both amazing also the ability to work your way up the ranks as a spartan or a soldier you are constantly having fun.

    it may seem that im being bias but ihave spent extensive hours on each of these consolesand came to a fair conclusion (above).
